What a cloud Mac really costs an indie developer
Three realistic usage patterns priced across dedicated rentals, hourly bare metal, CI minutes and weekly hours, so you can pick by how you actually work.

“How much does a cloud Mac cost?” has no single answer, because the price depends far more on how you use it than on whose Mac it is. A service that is cheapest for one developer is the most expensive for another. So instead of a price list, here are three realistic indie developers and what each one would pay.
All figures use public list prices from September 2026, before tax, and assume a 4.33-week month. They ignore free tiers except where noted.
Rule of thumb: below roughly 40 hours of Mac time a month, metered options win. Above roughly 100, a dedicated machine wins. In between, it depends on how spiky your usage is and how much you value not maintaining a machine.
The three developers
A: the weekend builder
Writes a SwiftUI app on a Windows laptop with an AI agent. Needs a Mac for a few builds and a TestFlight upload most weekends. About 4 hours a month, in 15 to 30 minute bursts.
B: the daily agent user
Runs Claude Code or Codex most weekdays. The agent needs a Mac several times a day for builds, tests and simulator screenshots. About 20 hours a month, in bursts of 10 to 40 minutes spread across the day.
C: the full-time iOS developer without a Mac
Works in iOS all day from Linux. About 120 hours a month, in long stretches.

The Scaleway and AWS rows assume you allocate a host only on days you use it and release it the same day, paying the 24-hour minimum each time. Keeping it all month costs €75 on Scaleway's monthly M1 price and about $640 at AWS's hourly rate.
Reading the table
- ·Developer A should never rent a machine by the month. Any metered option is cheaper, and a weekly-hours plan is cheapest because four hours fit inside one week's allowance.
- ·Developer B is where metering beats CI. Twenty hours of GitHub Actions is about $74, and CI is the wrong shape for an agent that explores. Weekly hours cover the same time for a fraction of it, as long as the usage is spread across weeks rather than crammed into one.
- ·Developer C should rent a dedicated Mac. At 120 hours, a $99 M4 mini with persistent files, a desktop and the whole machine's performance is the right answer, if you can get one: several dedicated providers were waitlisted when we checked.
Costs the price list does not show
- ·Forgotten machines. A daily-minimum host you forget to release costs another day. On AWS that is about $21 each time.
- ·Setup time. A bare machine needs Xcode (a multi-gigabyte download), simulator runtimes and your toolchains. Preinstalled images save the first hour of every fresh machine.
- ·Maintenance. A dedicated Mac needs macOS and Xcode updates, disk cleanup and the occasional reboot. That is your time.
- ·Hardware. A NoMac session is a VM, not a whole Mac mini. Large projects compile faster on dedicated hardware, and a longer build uses more of your hours.
What about just buying a Mac?
A base Mac mini is the cheapest Mac per hour if you use it for years and it is the only machine you need. It is less attractive when you already own a good Windows or Linux machine, work from a laptop, or mostly need macOS for an agent that runs somewhere else. Renting also means someone else deals with the next Xcode that needs the next macOS.
