Hourly cloud Mac prices often hide a 24-hour minimum. Here is what AWS, Scaleway, MacinCloud and per-second services actually charge for a 20-minute job.

Search for “rent a Mac by the hour” and you will find hourly prices from AWS, Scaleway and others that look like a bargain: under a dollar an hour for a real Apple silicon machine. Then you read the small print. Most hourly Mac offers charge you for a whole day before the first hour counts.
The short version: AWS EC2 Mac and Scaleway both apply a 24-hour minimum per allocation. A 20-minute build on an EC2 mac2-m2.metal host costs about $21, not about 30 cents.
Where the 24-hour minimum comes from
Bare-metal Mac hosts are whole physical machines, and the large providers lease them with a one-day minimum. AWS calls it the Dedicated Host minimum allocation; Scaleway documents that a Mac mini is charged for at least 24 hours once it is assigned. The hourly rate only applies after that first day.
What a 20-minute job actually costs
Take a realistic short task: compile a project, run its tests, archive it. Twenty minutes of Mac time. Here is what that costs on each service at its list price (September 2026 for all but NoMac), assuming it is the only thing you do that day.

Per-minute CI is cheap for one job, but it only runs what is in your workflow file. The daily-minimum hosts are cheap only if you actually use the day. If you run macOS work for eight hours straight, Scaleway's M1 at €2.64 a day is excellent value. If you run it for twenty minutes, you paid for the other twenty-three hours and forty minutes.
The pattern that makes daily minimums expensive
Most iOS work without a Mac is bursty. You write code on Windows or Linux, then you need a Mac for a few minutes to compile, then not again until tomorrow. An AI agent makes this more pronounced: it might need a build, a test run and a simulator screenshot three times in an afternoon, each for a few minutes.
- ·Keep the host all day: you pay the day, but you must remember to release it, or you pay the next one too.
- ·Allocate per task: you pay a full day each time, and wait for provisioning each time.
- ·Keep it all month: it is now a dedicated monthly rental with extra steps.
What “by the hour” should mean
A genuinely metered Mac has three properties. The minimum is small, measured in minutes, not hours. Setup and queue time are not billed. And stopping is cheap and final, so there is no reason to leave a machine running just in case.
That is how NoMac works. A session is a fresh macOS VM that is ready in about a minute. The clock starts when it is ready, bills per minute after a one-minute minimum, and stops when you stop, at which point the VM is deleted. Your project and build caches stay on the account's 20 GB drive for the next session. It costs $0.90 an hour, from prepaid credit that never expires, so twenty minutes is about 30¢. Default limits of two hours per session and ten idle minutes mean a forgotten session cannot run all night.
When the daily minimum is the right deal
Be honest about your usage. If you need a Mac for most of the working day, or you want a whole machine that stays as you left it or a self-hosted CI runner, the 24-hour hosts and dedicated monthly rentals are cheaper per hour than anything metered, and they give you the whole machine. The daily minimum only hurts when the day is mostly empty.
